Troop 751 sent two crews of older Scouts backpacking at the national high adventure base at Philmont Scout Ranch in northern New Mexico. We rode the train from Kirkwood to Raton, NM. Crew #1 made a trek through the southern part of Philmont while crew #2 started to the north. Each 10-day trek visited a mix of staffed camps and wilderness trail camps. The staffed camps have a variety of activities, and often the crew could enjoy the program at a staffed camp while passing through on their way to a tail camp. Both crews hiked back into base camp via Tooth Ridge and the Tooth of Time. Only a couple of the fleeter Scouts from crew #1 made it to the top of the Tooth of Time formation before approaching thunder made the rest turn back. Neither crew saw any bears.
